  1. I agree with a good part of your recommendations but I have some reservations. First of all one has to be reasonable about addressing this problem.

It has always been said (but probably not all that true) that gout is the "rich man's disease". That is because it was blamed on lobster, crabs, shellfish and other sea delicacies. But it really doesn't stop there. Gout is really cause from the bodies failure to metabolize purines. Purines are in a wider variety of foods than most people realize. Regular old dairy products, red meat, cheese, organ meat, some green vegetables and the song goes on. One can easily conclude it is not relegated just to shell fish.

Therefore a decrease in food high in purine content is recommended along with hydration and exercise.

Now comes the sticky subject, at least in my humble view. There are beer and liquor drinkers. You are NOT going to stop those of whom engage in that conduct or social endulgance to completely stop. The Friday night beer drinker looks forwards to his weekend routine of repast and enjoyment. There is virtually no way you will influence that person to stop. They will laugh at you and some will say the pain is worth it. Aside from that moderation can be achieved on a gradual basis but make no mistake, you cannot take away a persons social refreshment.

Having said that, doctors say gout is forever. They treat it with varying degrees of allopurinol and before that they used cholchicene, something of a poison that literally evacuates everything harmful or not, from the body. The side effects are arduous.

What are the clear cut answers? Your recommendations are predicated on the willingness of someone to comply with the suggestions. As we are aware, most will not fully comply and are left to their own devices.

I am not suggesting or giving advice. As a gout sufferer myself, I know the headaches and pain. Although I have not encountered an attach in about five years, I have modified my diet. But, YES, I do drink beer and I am NOT giving it up. I might conclude that most others won't either.
